The School for Change Agents

#ProjectA

Ian and Lynsey had the pleasure of joining the Welsh Ambulance Services for a 12 hour shift - they had an incredible day experiencing the amazing work and professionalism of ambulance crews and paramedics. They were were warmly welcomed by the crews.

Lynsey really appreciated the teamwork, care and compassion of the paramedics and ambulance service.

Ian had an amazing day and by the end of it felt part of #TeamWAST. Lynsey and Ian would like to thank everyone who made their 'ride out' possible and for looking after them so well on the day. Just a small insight into the work of the ambulance service but a wonderful perspective to take away and build into #ProjectA.

Ian and Lynsey also facilitated a workshop for the new business management network in the Welsh Ambulance Service - keen to operate a network of like minded people rather than a 'sub group' of the leadership team, it was interesting session that explored ways of working in the future and aspirations of what they wanted their network to achieve. It also showcased virtual collaboration, as seen by Ian and Jonathan's posts.

We were absolutely delighted to receive a blog from Nathan at Yorkshire Ambulance as part of the #Improvement Zooms and the Yorkshire Ambulance QI Fellowship. Nathan reflects on his experience of QI, the fellowship and being a change agent.

#FutureMidwifery

This month we have launched a series of 30 Day Challenges to Transforming Perceptions of Midwifery. The first challenge focuses on #JoyAtWork and we have co-created a #FutureMidwifery Ambassadors resource pack full of ideas and activities.

Last week saw the first Midwifery Ambassadors Virtual Forum - Each maternity service has the opportunity to nominate two midwives to become ambassadors for the Transforming Perceptions of Midwifery programme.

#TeamCNO

Bev and Olly held a zoom with #teamCNO Nurse Ambassador Debbie Cromack to explore how the School for Change Agents can support the global Nursing Now #NightingaleChallenge.

Teams

Whilst reviewing the outputs of three different tweet chats, Helen has discovered that autonomy is a strong theme of what NHS staff want at work.

Helen has been thinking about frameworks for having conversations about change.

Leadership

In the complex world of health & care, there are few challenges that are discrete problems with a single answer. As leaders, we have to become comfortable with paradoxes: dilemmas that are "both/and" rather than "either/or". Read more here.

Many senior leader colleagues say they have no time for reading and learning. Yet if we spent one hour a week now, we'd have 20 hours of new knowledge by the end of the year. Why we must invest in learning and time block it in our calendars.

Unearth your own potential as a change agent, leader and/or person by becoming more self-aware. There's two kinds of self-awareness: 1) Internal: knowing who you are & appreciating your value; 2) External: knowing how others see you.

Diversity

Along with gender bias, racial bias & culture bias in the workplace, age bias is a significant issue. Yet knowledge & expertise (the main predictors of job performance) keep increasing even beyond the age of 80. Why we need older workers.

Advice for being an ally produced by Dr Muna Abdi.

Research from the USA suggests that patients from a BAME background are likely to get hurt more than other patients by doctor burnout, because burnout lowers resistance to racial bias. Find out more here.

Wellbeing

Helen has been reflecting on maturity and minor situations that aren't a big deal in the context of your whole life.
