Inclusion

On Tuesday, for the first time in her 27 years Ras, one of our clinical associates who is also a dietician, has been able to use a hospital bin in her home organisation independently. Understanding accessibilities needs is an essential part of how we work in Horizons and we are learning so much with Ras.

Improvement

Our relationship with our line manager is typically a key factor in whether we thrive at work and stay in our jobs. It's a two-way relationship (partnership) that requires us both to invest in it. Success is balancing what we both want/need. Click here to read the article, 'How To Build a Thriving Relationship With Your Manager' for more information.

Helen is a big advocate of creating a theory of change for any change strategy or initiative. However, it is tricky when we are changing a complex system as we can't set everything out in a linear way and must allow for emergence. Some great advice and resources can be found here from @gkjohn on how systems change?

When you are facilitating a meeting or workshop, you can feel pressure to make sure you know the answers and to stick to the plan (a performance mindset). But to activate the team and get great outcomes, a facilitator needs a curiosity mindset. For more insight on this click here to read 'our secret superpower for facilitation' by jackie_colburn.

We live in such an uncertain world. The future is multiple, undetermined and open to many different possibilities. It's difficult to plan in a linear structured way. The more we can stick together and shine a light on the future collaboratively, the easier it will be. Sketch note by @grantdraws.

Here is an interesting piece on organisational design by @jurgenappelo. His approach? Create purpose-driven units. He says purpose is more stable than functions, services or channels. In this set-up, managers see themselves as caretakers of purpose-driven systems. Find out more by clicking here to read 'How Do We Keep the Business Agile and Aligned?'.

It's wonderful to be preparing for face to face events again. We need them to be super-effective and 90% of the success is in the planning phase. That means working with a diverse design team and using participatory approaches. Some advice from @ndcollaborative on this, can be found by clicking here.

Research from Harvard Business School - in a digital era,  the key skills leaders need are nothing to do with digital literacy. So called "soft skills" are much more important, e.g. adaptability, creativity, being a change catalyst, building trust. Click here to read the Harvard Business School article 'Curiosity, Not Coding: 6 Skills Leaders Need in the Digital Age' for more information.

It is hard to persuade anyone to do something they don't want to do. But here are 2 ways to open people's minds to the possibility of change, based on learning from social science: the "foot-in-the-door" and the "door-in-the-face''. Find out more by clicking here to read the Harvard Business Review article 'Persuading Your Team to Embrace Change'.

"A dream begins with the faintest of ideas, so soft you might not even notice at first." The factors that will positively change our world already exist as weak signals at the margins of our current system. We need to take time to listen and become attuned to them
