International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare

The team attended the International Forum in Glasgow last week, facilitating several successful and very popular workshops. Below is just a small sample of the tweets from the sessions. For more, please see #Quality2019.

#VirtualCollaborate

We launched our new #VirtualCollaborate session during Friday's breakfast session. Starting in September 2019, the NHS Horizons team is seeking to work intensively with 10 partner organisations or systems that want to commit to developing a high level of competence in virtual hosting and facilitation for improvement. They can be organisations that operate in a local area or at a regional or national level. You can find out more about the programme, and express your interest here.

There's huge potential for virtual collaboration methods in improvement, for faster, more engaging, more effective change. We need to invest in capabilities for this.Using Zoom you can have 10,000 people working together at once to co-design and co-produce. We can involve many more people working virtually, we can engage patients, staff and anyone who might not have been able to travel to or join our meetings otherwise. We can collaborate, annotate, take polls and share anything on our screen when working virtually.
"Almost all forms of meeting and interaction can be moved to a virtual format with no loss of effectiveness, if trust and good relationships are established and sustained."
Kathryn co-facilitated virtually from London.
Thank you to #ProjectA colleagues who helped demonstrate a virtual meeting.

"Working virtually opens up opportunities for patients to be included and involved" said patient representative Carol Munt.

The power of virtual collaboration!

A mention for the Nursing Now England Ambassadors' Forum which uses Zoom.

There was a packed room! Thank you to everyone who attended.

How to be a brilliant change agent

Slides from the workshop 'How to be a brilliant change agent' that Helen co-facilitated with Kate Pound and Pete Gordon.
It was another packed room...
...with so many people attending more chairs had to be found.

The view from the stage during the workshop.

During the 'How to be a brilliant change agent' workshop the participants were asked to tell their stories using Transformation cards. This graphic shows the words/phrases they used to sum up their journeys.

Our definitions of individual and collective agency:

Purpose is different from aim:

Igniting the collective brilliance of people across health and care

The various methods of connecting, communicating, and collaborating using examples from Nursing Now England, #ProjectA, and Continuing Healthcare, as well as work from Canada, were presented.
This work is all about trust and good relationships, said Helen.
These are all the ways which #ProjectA engaged with frontline staff and other stakeholders.

Bev talking about the nursing and midwifery 30 Day Challenges.

Bev shared the work of the nursing and midwifery ambassadors, such as Joanne.

Jodeme Goldhar, our international fellow, spoke about her work in Canada.

Kate talking about the impact virtual collaboratives has had on Continuing Healthcare.

Whose improvement is it anyway? Putting the person in to person-centred care

Catherine Wilton and Anna Severwright spoke about personalised care. The six components of personalised care:

There's an enormous amount of networks in our communities and if we reach out we can start looking at what we have got rather than what we haven't got.

Anna Severwright shared her story of personalised care.

Positive feedback about the session!

Participants were asked to make pledges. Here's an example: "Make 'What Matters to You' the cornerstone of every consultation with every child and their family or carer."

Creating a better value healthcare system

Claire and Rosie supported the session co-presented by Hugh McCaughey, the new director of the improvement directorate in NHS Improvement.

Keynotes

The theme of the talk by Derek Feeley and Jason Leitch was agency. Here are 10 ways to build your agency for change:
Don Berwick talked about the power of placebo and how kindness heals. Here's a comprehensive summary of psychological research about the power of the placebo effect.

Helen wore a New Power tshirt to introduce Henry Timms' keynote.

We a mix of old and new power in health and care.

Three key messages from Henry's session:

Helen's New Power t shirt was a hit!
Zoe is proud to be involved with #EndPJParalysis - join the global virtual summit between 10th and 12th July.

Sprint School

The team helped facilitate a 'sprint school' applying design thinking to quality improvement in health and care, involving global participants.

If we want person-centered, participative, sustainable change for the future, we need to combine design methods with QI methods.

Start with a patient or staff experience when you are thinking of exploring and improving your system...

It's great to see participants enjoyed the day, and are going to sign up to the School for Change Agents too!

Organisational culture

Who are the most influential people in your organisation? They might not be who you think they are. Typically, 3% of people drive conversations with 85 or 90% of people. These 'superconnectors' can make or break change. Read the post.

Innovation

We're seeing amazing innovations in health and care; however, if we don't change the health and care ecosystem, the innovations might not deliver the improved outcomes we had hoped for. Read more.
