We in health & care can learn greatly from the Invictus Games Foundation about looking after our own physical, mental & social wellbeing & that of our teams.  Watch out for the first podcast & follow @WeAreInvictus.

#Improve4Patients

This week Horizons led a virtual Improvement Directors' Network 'unconference' about the role of improvement. You can find out what happened during the session by following this thread. Our National Improvement Director, Hugh McCaughey shared his favourite proverb "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."

Key to success at the Improvement Directors' network Unconference were the "Yodas": wise people who were appointed in each session to support & feed back learning. About Yodas.

#VirtualCollaborate

Helen loves learning new virtual collaboration skills. Her latest favourite is creating spider diagrams with a group in real time via @Mentimeter. Here she asked the group about the extent to each of the 7 simple rules she created with Goran Henriks features in their transformation efforts.

Jamboards are an effective (& free) way to add interaction, engagement & learning to your virtual sessions on MS Teams or Zoom. Here's 10 simple but powerful Jamboard templates to use.

Virtual facilitation & collaboration: are you looking for hundreds of tools, frameworks and ideas to get better outcomes from your workshops & meetings? See this brilliant free collection from Andi Roberts - one of the most generous sharers on Twitter.

What Matters To You

The British Columbia Patient Safety & Quality Council of Canada (BCPSQC) has co-produced some new resources on virtual care appointments with their patients & families, based on "what matters to you". Here's the first which is for patients & families.

You can find more resources from BCPSQC on virtual care appointments aimed at people working in health and care here.

Wellbeing

Belonging is a powerful concept for improvement. It's the ultimate measure of inclusion and diversity and something we must create if we want people to engage in change. Helen shared these slides on belonging to colleagues in the Improvement Directorate.

Walking is something we should try to do every day, if we can, during lockdown. It's not just walking for exercise or transport; it's walking for purpose: We can walk for 1) perspective 2) connection 3) learning 4) gratitude 5) productivity.

Learning and Development

How will what you do look different beyond #Covid19? For those in health & care, what will pathways be? Could you draw them as sketchnotes? Here's some inspiration via @ImpactWales. They're educators & have sketchnoted repurposing/delivery of the National Curriculum for Wales.

Goal-gradient effect: the closer we get to a goal, the more in reach it feels & the harder we try. In improvement, if we express big, ambitious goals, they can feel unachievable (even demoralising)to others. It's often best to have cycles of smaller goals by Sketchplanator.

Learning styles: new research shows widespread belief in this myth amongst educators & it's not going away anytime soon. Similar in leadership development circles. The discredited kinesthetic/visual/auditory model is still widely used.
